Wednesday 15th Jan - Workshop 1 - Chairs
Wednesday 15th Jan - Workshop 1
‘Chairs’
Notes on Unit Aims / Constituent Features / Content
Chair Exercises:
Pt.1 Brainstorm
- Thought about what can a chair represent?, what does a chair look like? And what words one to mind when we think of a chair.
- Used chair as our stimulus - used this exercise to help us understand how to interpret a stimulus.
- Helped develop meaning to a chair - taking something simple and making it into a creative sequence.
Pt.2 Sequence No Chair
Picked 5 words from our brainstorm and created movements in a sequence based on these movements.
Mine:
- Barrier
- Reaching for a person
- Right Angle
- Relax
- Bed
Pt.3 Sequence With Chair
This time picked 4 new words from our brainstorm and created movements in a sequence based on these movements this time with the chair.
Mine:
- Reaching for something
- Step/ladder
- Absence of a person
- Protection
We then merged the sequence without the chair with the chair to make one piece.
Pt.4 Duets
We put these 2 sequences aside and created a completely new sequence with the chairs in duets - I was with Harrison. We came up with a narrative of 2 people in search of each other.
Pt.5 Integrate Altogether
We picked apart our solo sequences to integrate them with our duet. We decided to start with my solo a we saw that it fit well. We then went half-way through our duet piece and I paused and froze while Harrison began his solo. We then chose certain moves within each other’s solo’s where we thought we could join in to add layers so that one of us wasn’t completely still while the other did their solo - we wanted it to not look like 2 solo’s and a duet and more as one flowing piece.
How we interpreted our piece:
- Maybe a relationship has ended or trying to find someone new but they are reverting back to one another - reaching.
- Movements/looking for each other = unsuccessful - not a lot of contact - going in opposite directions = distance is small between them literally but metaphorically they are far and can’t find each other.
